How to make a GIF from a video

  1. Open a video, or drop it on the page.
  2. Set the start and end, and choose the frames per second and the width.
  3. Select Make GIF, then save it or share it.

Small enough to share

A GIF stores every frame as a picture, so its size grows with its length, its frame rate and its width. The tool shows a rough size before you start and warns you when a GIF would be very large. A few seconds at 10 to 15 frames per second and 480 pixels wide is right for chats and documents.

Good colours from 256

GIF images have at most 256 colours. The tool picks the best palette for your clip, one for the whole GIF or one per frame, and dithering mixes neighbouring colours so skies and skin tones stay smooth instead of banding.

Made on your device

The frames are decoded by your browser's own video engine and written into the GIF in the tab. Your video is never uploaded, and the GIF has no watermark.

Questions about Video to GIF

Is my video uploaded?

No. The frames are read and the GIF is made in your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 600 frames, which is 30 seconds at 20 frames per second or a minute at 10. Longer GIFs become very large; for longer clips a short MP4 is a better choice.

Why is my GIF larger than the video?

Video formats store only what changes between frames, while a GIF stores much more of each frame. Use fewer frames per second, a smaller width or a shorter part to make it smaller.

Does the GIF loop?

Yes, by default it plays in a loop. Choose Once to play it a single time.

Is the sound kept?

No. GIF images have no sound. To keep the sound, trim or compress the video instead.
