How to compress a video
- Open a video, or drop it on the page.
- Choose a quality and, if you like, a lower resolution.
- Select Compress video, then save the smaller MP4.
Smaller files that still look good
Phones record at high bitrates so every frame stays sharp, which makes large files. Re-encoding with H.264 at a sensible bitrate for the picture size usually makes a video several times smaller with little visible difference. Balanced is the right choice for most videos.
Lower the resolution for even smaller files
A 4K video shown on a phone looks the same at 1080p, and 720p is plenty for chat apps. Lowering the resolution takes the size down further than quality alone.
On your device, with its own video engine
The compression uses WebCodecs, the encoder built into your browser, often on the graphics chip. The video is never sent to a server, so there is no upload to wait for and no copy left behind.
Questions about Compress video
Is my video uploaded?
No. It is read, compressed and saved in your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server.
How much smaller will it be?
It depends on the video. Phone videos often become three to ten times smaller at Balanced quality. A video that was already compressed may not get smaller: the tool tells you, and you can try Small or a lower resolution.
Which format does it save?
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays on every phone, computer, TV and website.
Can I make it fit a size limit, like WhatsApp or Discord?
Yes: the WhatsApp and Discord compressor works out the bitrate from the video's length so the file fits under the size you pick.
Is there a size limit?
No fixed limit. Very long or 4K videos need a device with enough free memory, and take longer on phones.
